20/07/2013Future Breaking Ceremony jump starts construction work

China, Shenzhen, Shekou, 19 July 2013

Today the construction work of the Glass Factory officially started with a Future Breaking Ceremony. With only less than five months to go Ole Bouman, Creative Director of the 2013 Shenzhen Biennale, inaugurates this key phase with the following words.

“Collegues, members of the press, workers, honorable guests,

Look around and be amazed. This place in the heart of Shekou is about to witness another change, as important as the pioneering days of the Industry Park. Look at the timeless beauty of these buildings, once a very productive factory, soon to become a producer of value. Think how the Power of Architecture can bridge the gap between the two. A perfect place for an architecture biennale.

You are here only five months since Mr. Zheng Yulong of China Merchants, Huang Weiwen of the Biennale Organization Committee and myself as newly appointed Creative Director met for the very first time. We met to discuss the potential of this old glass factory as main venue of the next Biennale. But also the challenges we would have to face, if we would pursue this. The ultra short time left before the opening on December 6 this year. The tight budget. The technical conditions. The remote location. And a few other issues.

First of all I want to congratulate all of you with the work that has been done ever since.
We now now what this factory can become for the Biennale and the long term future: a Value Factory as pivotal building in the new Culture Special Zone of Shekou.
We know now that with very little means, a new design will shape this factory and transform it into a spiritual place.
We know now that the factory will enable a variety of different activities, by a variety of audiences.
And we know now that very soon a host of globally famous institutions will inhabit this place.

So, we have very good reason to hope this is going to be an exciting place.

Therefore, I want to congratulate you even more with the courage and determination that will be crucial to finish this work in time and to finish it beautifully. The architects, the client, the curators, the engineers and the workers, they are going to do it and to prove a miracle is possible.

This idea has been developed in 5 months.
To materialize it we have another 5 months.

Shenzhen Speed at it very best! It is a great honor to me, to be part of it. Thank you all for the trust you gave me and my team to contribute to this city.”
